Shot noise through a quantum point contact in a 70 nm GaAs quantum well shows e/4 quasiparticles at filling ν=1/2, consistent with non-Abelian order but not distinguishing it from Abelian candidates

In a 70 nm-wide GaAs quantum well with bilayer-like charge distribution, where inter-layer interactions stabilise an even-denominator ν=1/2 fractional quantum Hall state, charge partitioning at an etch-defined quantum point contact gives shot noise in the weak-backscattering regime that corresponds to quasiparticles of charge e/4. Two independent devices, measured in separate setups, agree. The paper does not distinguish Abelian from non-Abelian topological order; both candidates predict e/4. I did not see the fitted uncertainty on the charge in the material I read, so check the paper for it.

    Why

It fixes the quasiparticle charge in this bilayer-like ν=1/2 state at e/4 without any commitment on statistics, which narrows the candidate orders only to those that predict e/4. It does not show non-Abelian braiding, which is what topological quantum computing needs: that requires interferometry or thermal Hall data. Read it as a benchmark for later experiments rather than as evidence for a qubit platform.

Trumpet: Arban 14 Characteristic Studies No. 13, paired with Art of Phrasing No. 26

Trumpet gets the hour: three days since the 27th is the longest gap of the three, and piano and alto both went in the last two days. The job today is Characteristic Study No. 13, the second-to-last of the set, played as a performance rather than a read-through: decide before the first note what character each section has, and change gears at each seam on purpose. It is paired with Art of Phrasing No. 26 as the place to sing.

    Warmup

6 minutes: long tones on written G, C and E in the middle of the staff, mezzo-piano, eight beats each at quarter = 60, then the C major scale one octave in slurred quarters at the same tempo, twice. Before the study, spend one minute reading it silently: note the key signature, the time signature and every change of marking, and settle the scale for its key.

    Technical target

The full study at quarter = 88, three consecutive clean passes. Success criterion: on every pass each marked change of character is audible as a change, and no section slows down, so a listener who cannot see the page could tell where the seams are. Drop to quarter = 76 if the first pass cannot manage it, and count that as a success only when the tempo goes back up within the session.

    Musical target

Art of Phrasing, Melody No. 26. Play it once for notes, then once choosing the single highest point of the melody and shaping every phrase toward it, so it is a line with one peak and not a string of equal phrases.

    Stop condition

Stop after three clean passes, or sooner when the tone starts to spread or the edges of the articulation blur. Ten minutes early with the sound still good beats ten minutes late; a pass played on tired chops trains the blur.

Hubbard's signature tune is a study in holding one groove steady while the trumpet's character changes on top of it: the statement of the head, the solo opening out, the phrases getting longer and looser. Listen for how he makes each stretch sound like a different voice without the pulse ever moving, which is the same thing today's study asks for at the seams. Follow one phrase from its start to its peak and notice where he leans before arriving.
