    LZ sees one isolated nuclear recoil at 248 ± 23 ± 23 keV in 2.84 tonne-years; a theory preprint reads it as atmospheric-neutrino up-scattering

After widening its nuclear-recoil window from about 55 keV to about 270 keV to probe inelastic dark-matter models, LUX-ZEPLIN reports a single candidate at 248 ± 23 (stat) ± 23 (sys) keV in 2.84 tonne-years (220 live days, March 2023 to April 2024). Secondary reports put the background-only tension at about 2.6σ global (3.4σ local); a theory paper quotes about 3.3σ local for an elastic isovector interaction, so the significance depends on the model and should not be quoted as one number. Jeesun and Majumdar (arXiv:2609.04185, v2 14 Oct) argue the event need not be galactic dark matter: atmospheric neutrinos up-scattering on xenon to a heavier state χ via a pseudoscalar mediator, with a momentum-dependent operator suppressing low-recoil events. Their example point is m_χ ≈ 1.13 GeV, m_φ ≈ 494 MeV, √(y_χ y_u) ≈ 0.33.

    Why

One event at ~3σ local, in a window opened after the fact, is the textbook case for the look-elsewhere effect, and the global figure is the one to carry. What it changes is that the high-recoil region of xenon detectors is now a place where theorists have a target, and a neutrino-origin reading predicts something checkable: a flux-driven rate that dark matter would not share. Very little is settled until the LZ paper is read and more exposure arrives.

Trumpet: Arban First Studies, paired with Art of Phrasing No. 31

Trumpet takes today: three days since it was last assigned, the longest gap of the three, and the last session was short, so another short one fits. The target is evenness of tone. Arban's First Studies, the default for tone and evenness, have not come up recently, and they stay in the low and middle register with no tonguing-speed work. The Art of Phrasing melody is No. 31, the continuation of the sequence.

    Warmup

5 minutes: long tones on written G, low C and E, 8 counts each at quarter = 60, mp, then the same three notes as a slow crescendo-decrescendo over 8 counts, p to mf and back. Listen for a core that stays the same colour as the volume changes.

    Technical target

Take one of the early First Studies exercises in quarter notes. Play it slurred at quarter = 60, then tongued ("tah", legato) at 60, then 72, then

    1. Success criterion: three consecutive passes at each tempo where every note

has the same length, weight and start, with no note in the line louder than its neighbours.

    Musical target

Play Art of Phrasing No. 31 twice: first straight, then with one clear high point per phrase and the notes before it leaning toward that peak and the notes after it relaxing away. Aim for a sound as plain and unforced as the First Studies tone, applied to a melody.

    Stop condition

About 25 minutes. Stop when the tone spreads, the attack gets fuzzy or the lips feel swollen, even if 84 is not reached; ten minutes early with a good sound beats ragged to the end. Finish with the Art of Phrasing melody at p.

Listening: Miles Davis, "Blue in Green"

A muted-sounding, close-to-the-microphone trumpet tone playing a slow melody with long gaps between phrases. Listen for how few notes Davis plays, how evenly each one starts and decays, and how the tone stays the same colour from the soft entry to the end of the note. That even, unforced sound is what the long-tone and First Studies work is building.
