Quantum jumps of sound: QND phonon-number measurement of a nanomechanical resonator (T₁ = 2.1 ms, 2χ/2π = 328 kHz per phonon, 85% heralded single-phonon fidelity)

A superconducting qubit dispersively coupled to a nanomechanical resonator was used for repeated quantum non-demolition measurements of the resonator's phonon number. The mechanical energy relaxation time is T₁ = 2.1 ms, the dispersive shift is 2χ/2π = 328 kHz per phonon, and heralded single-phonon states are prepared with 85% fidelity. Repeated measurement shows discrete quantum jumps between the ground and first excited state of the mechanical mode, the direct energy-quantization signature that position measurements cannot give.

    Why

It is the mechanical analogue of the quantum-jump experiments done on cavity photons: single-phonon resolution with a millisecond lifetime makes phonon-number-resolved state preparation and measurement routine rather than a one-off. It does not test new physics, and the 85% heralding fidelity limits what can be built on it yet. The payoff is for mechanical memories and tests of quantum mechanics at larger mass, where this readout is the missing primitive.

Ion–SiV⁻ Bell pairs at 1.03 kHz with 87.9% fidelity, a heterogeneous quantum link

A trapped ¹³⁸Ba⁺ ion was entangled with a silicon-vacancy centre in a diamond nanophotonic cavity: a photon from the ion is frequency-converted and re-encoded, reflected off the SiV⁻-cavity system, and a single detection heralds entanglement. Including all conversion losses the reported rate is about 1.03(1) kHz at 87.9(7)% Bell-state fidelity, which the authors state is about four times the fastest photonic ion-ion link.

    Why

A rate of roughly one Bell pair per millisecond matches the cycle time of planned trapped-ion processors, so link rate stops being the obvious bottleneck for modular architectures. It is one link between two different platforms, not a network: 87.9% fidelity is below what distillation-based schemes need without further rounds, and no scaling or memory-lifetime comparison is in the abstract. Treat as a promising preprint pending refereeing.

Trumpet: Arban intervals, fifths and sixths slurred, with Art of Phrasing No. 29

    • assignment

Trumpet takes today: three days since it was last assigned, the longest gap of the three. The work stays in the interval half of Arban's Scales & intervals section and widens from thirds and fourths to fifths and sixths, slurred and in the comfortable register, paired with Art of Phrasing No. 29. Short and clean again.

    Warmup

5 minutes: long tones on written G, C and low G, 8 counts each at mp, then lip slurs between adjacent partials at quarter = 60. Listen for the slur to speak without a bump or a split at the change.

    Technical target

Arban's interval studies on fifths, then sixths, slurred, in two keys and within the staff. Success criterion: three consecutive clean passes at quarter = 66, then 76, then 84, each leap landing in the centre of the note on the first try.

    Musical target

Art of Phrasing No. 29: play it in whole phrases, one breath each, and find the high point of every phrase. Let the leaps carry the line toward that point instead of announcing themselves.

    Stop condition

About 30 minutes. Stop when the tone spreads or the lips feel flat or swollen, even if the tempo goal is missed; ten minutes early beats a ragged finish. No tonguing speed work or high-register work today.

The theme is made of wide, open intervals played cleanly at speed. Listen for how Miles keeps one tone across the leaps and lets the line breathe between phrases, with nothing forced. That steadiness across intervals is what today's slurs are for.
