The Short-Baseline Near Detector at Fermilab reports its design and initial performance: a liquid-argon TPC electron lifetime exceeding 30 ms, which the collaboration puts at ten times the design requirement, data-collection efficiency of 98.6%, and a light yield above 10 photoelectrons per MeV. No oscillation or cross-section result is claimed.

    Why

Electron lifetime sets how much drifting charge survives to the anode, so a lifetime far above the drift time means near-uniform response across the volume and cleaner calorimetry for the sterile-neutrino search in the Short-Baseline Neutrino programme. It is a readiness statement rather than physics, and the figure that decides the physics reach (light-yield uniformity and cosmic-background rejection) is not in the abstract. Very little changes until the first oscillation or cross-section data.

    Piano: two-handed modern blues in E https://brona90.github.io/twelve-keys/blues_two_handed_modern.html

Piano takes today: three days since it was last assigned, the longest gap of the three, with alto yesterday and trumpet the day before. Sunday leaves room for a longer single block. The exercise is blues_two_handed_modern from twelve-keys, in E, a key that sits awkwardly under the hands. It is the blues family, which has not come up since 09-23, after a run of voicings and progressions.

    Warmup

5 minutes: an E blues scale, hands together an octave apart, up and down two octaves at quarter = 80, even eighths, mp. Then the 12-bar form with only left-hand shell voicings (root, 3rd, 7th) at quarter = 80. Listen for a level touch with no accent on the thumb.

    Technical target

Play the exercise's 12-bar form in E with both hands, one full chorus without stopping, at quarter = 72, then 88, then 100. Success criterion: three consecutive choruses at each tempo with no stalls at the I-IV change in bar 5 and the turnaround in bars 11-12, and the left and right hands landing together on every downbeat.

    Musical target

Play one chorus as a melody: a single right-hand idea stated in bars 1-4, answered in bars 5-8 and resolved in 9-12, with the left hand dropping to pp under it. Aim for a phrase that breathes at the end of each four bars rather than a stream of notes.

    Stop condition

About 45 minutes. Stop when the hands tense or the tempo drops back on its own, even if 100 is not reached; a clean chorus at 88 beats a ragged one at

    1. Finish by playing the slowest tempo once more.

A 12-bar blues with a piano that plays its blues in few notes. Listen to the comping behind the horns: short chords placed late in the bar, then silence. Then the piano solo, which stays close to the blues scale and leaves space between phrases. That economy is the sound today's one-chorus phrase is aiming for.
